Coolangatta Gold

The Coolangatta Gold is a tough Ironman event. It is held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The organization in charge of the event is Surf Life Saving Australia.

The Coolangatta Gold course starts, and finishes, at Kurrawa. A 23km ski leg to Greenmount is followed by a short run, 0.65km. There is a 3.5km swim near Coolangatta, a 4km run and then a 5.5km board leg to Burleigh. The exhausting 10km run to the finish line completes the course. An extremely challenging endurance event, it can take more than four hours for the winner to finish the course.

In 1984, Guy Leech finished first, ahead of Lawrence Reece and Craig Riddington. Michael King was the winner in the 1991 event and Darren Mercer the following year. More recent winners of the event are Caine Eckstein in 2005, Zane Holmes in 2006, Rhys Drury in 2007 with Caine Eckstein regaining the title and defending successfully.

Hayley Bateup and Alicia Marriott have been the standout competitors in the women's Coolangatta Gold, each winning multiple titles.

The Coolangatta Gold competitors are divided into many categories. There is the men's and women's, there are teams, the short course and masters categories for older ages as well as a category for under nineteens.

The event can be seen in the movie The Coolangatta Gold, starring Joss McWilliam, Nick Tate, Colin Friels, Josephine Smulders, Robyn Nevin and Grant Kenny. The film was made in 1984.

Visitors to the event can land at Gold Coast Airport. It is a short drive from there to Coolangatta. The Coolangatta Gold can occur at different times of the year, September or November.

Other activities around the Gold Coast area include visiting the many shops, the beach, several professional sporting team are located there and it is also the home to many amusement parks. Some of the parks to attend are Dreamworld, Seaworld, Outback Spectacular, Wet n' Wild Water Park, Warner Bros Movie World, Currumbin Sanctuary, Fleays Wildlife Park and Paradise Country.
